March 23: God is Not Surprised

The surprising coronavirus pandemic has perplexed and confused the world and even the world’s virus experts. When will the infections peak? Where will it go next? What determines whether someone will show symptoms or will heal from the virus? An invisible, microscopic genetic material is causing havoc to our daily routine and life.

Though we have yet to fully understand this virus, we may be sure that God is totally sovereign over COVID-19. He is not surprised by it nor is He afraid of what will come next.

And unlike the coronavirus, which is a limited, created thing, God is uncreated, incomprehensible, and utterly mysterious because He is infinite in all His ways. God’s greatness is unsearchable (Psalm 145:3), and we will never fully know Him. Yet, He has chosen to reveal Himself to us through nature (Romans 1:19-20; Psalm 19), through Scripture (2 Peter 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:16), and through Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:15). Praise God that we can sufficiently know Him! And all that we learn about God and His attributes is worthy of our praise, worship, and adoration. In fact, the more we learn about God, the more it should move us toward worship. And even the things that God chooses not to reveal to us would move us toward worship of Him if we were to know them (“The secret things belong to the LORD our God…” Deuteronomy 29:29a). He is absolutely worthy of all our love, adoration, and exultation!

Let us continue to press in to know more and more about God—let it become our life’s goal and ultimate aim, superior to all other hopes and dreams.

“Lord, thank you that though you are eternal and infinite, we can know you.

Thank you for showing yourself to us.

As we learn more about you, let it move us to worship you and trust in you—

even in the midst of confusing times.

Thank you for accepting us and loving us fully in Christ.

We praise you for your infinite incomprehensibility.”
