What We Believe
At Valley Bible Church, our hope in Christ is central to our faith. This section outlines the core teachings that we hold as foundational to the Christian faith—truths that we affirm not only with our minds but also with deep conviction in our hearts. By embracing these shared beliefs, our church family stands unified in faith and equipped to share the reason for the hope we have in Jesus Christ.
SCRIPTURE: The Bible, consisting of the 66-books of the Old and New Testaments, is the only written Word of God; inspired, infallible, and authoritative, and central to our faith and practice. We hold that all Scripture is God-breathed and to be used for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, and serves as the final authority in all matters of faith and conduct (2 Timothy 3:16-17, Psalm 119:103-106; 2 Peter 1:19-21). Through its teachings, God reveals to us His character, His will for humanity, and the way of salvation through Jesus Christ (John 5:39; Romans 15:4). We are committed to the diligent study and application of Scripture, trusting it as God's wisdom used by the Holy Spirit to guide and transform our lives into the likeness of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18, Hebrews 4:12).
GOD: There is one true God, eternally existing in three equally distinct divine persons (Trinity): God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-19). He is the one and only God, creator and sustainer of all things (Genesis 1:1, Colossians 1:15-17), infinite, all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present, holy and just. He is loving, gracious, and merciful and perfect in His character (Psalm 147:5, Jeremiah 23:24, Ephesians 2:4-5).
FATHER: God the Father sovereignly and providentially rules over the entire universe and lavishes upon it His love, truth and justice in all things (Psalm 103:19, Ephesians 4:4-6). He is the Father of Jesus Christ the Eternal Son (1 Peter 1:3), as well as Father over all creation (Psalm 90:1-2). As Father, He initiates His love to all humankind (Romans 5:1-10). His love was ultimately demonstrated in sending His own Son, Jesus Christ, to be the Savior of the world – the redeemer of humankind (John 3:16-17).
JESUS CHRIST: Jesus Christ is the one and only eternal Son of God who took on human form to reveal God’s love and truth to the world and to be the Savior of all who believe in Him (John 1:1-14). While remaining fully God, He became fully man (Philippians 2:5-11), fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies of the promised Messiah and King (2 Corinthians 1:20).
Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus secured everything necessary for the forgiveness of sins and our reconciliation with God (Colossians 2:13-14). He died and rose from the dead, assuring all believers of their future resurrection to eternal life, and He now reigns in power at the right hand of God (John 5:22).
THE HOLY SPIRIT: The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son, actively involved in the work of salvation in a variety of ways. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgement, preparing people to receive Jesus as Savior (John 16:7-11). The Holy Spirit washes, renews and regenerates those who turn to Christ in faith (Titus 3:5-7). Once someone receives salvation by trusting in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit indwells them as a promise of their eternal inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14, Romans 5:5). He instructs, guides, protects, empowers, and intercedes on behalf of all disciples of Jesus, producing in them the life of God (Galatians 5:22-23), and transforming them into the likeness of Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18). The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to each believer for the purpose of building up the body of Christ and expanding the local church (Ephesians 4:11-13, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11).
HUMANITY: All people are created in the image of God to have fellowship with him, but became alienated from that relationship through disobedience (Genesis 1:26-27, Genesis 3:22-23). People are incapable of regaining their righteousness before God through their own efforts and are otherwise condemned to eternal separation from Him (Romans 3:20-23). Humanity’s only hope of reconciliation is God’s gracious intervention through Jesus Christ (Romans 5:12). Anyone who is united with Christ through faith becomes a new creation through the work of the Holy Spirit, a partner in the ministry of reconciliation, and a co-heir with Him in eternal life (2 Cor. 5:17-21).
SALVATION: Jesus Christ’s death on the cross is the only means for the forgiveness of sin. His resurrection proved His victory over sin and death, offering hope to all who believe (Acts 4:11-12; Romans 10:9-10). Because of His sacrifice, God freely offers salvation to all who repent of their sins and place their faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection as full payment for their sins (Romans 6:23).
Salvation is a gift of grace received through faith, not something we can earn by our own efforts (Ephesians 2:8-9). The moment someone trusts in Jesus, they are born again, filled with the Holy Spirit, and assured of their place in God’s family (Ephesians 1:13-14). As believers, we grow in faith through the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, who sets us apart and transforms our lives.
Once a person is saved by God’s grace, their salvation is secure—they belong to Him forever (1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Corinthians 5:17).
THE FUTURE: Jesus Christ will return bodily to the earth to fully establish His kingdom. On that day, He will bring an end to all pain and suffering, evil, rebellion, and will reign with His people forever. We believe in the bodily resurrection of both the just and the unjust—the just to eternal joy in the presence of God in the new heaven and new earth, and the unjust to eternal separation from Him (Matthew 16:27; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 20:11-15; Revelation 21:1-5).
Since the day of His return will be sudden and at an unknown time, we are called to live with urgency, sharing the hope of salvation with those who do not yet know Him (Matthew 24:44). As followers of Christ, we eagerly await His return, living in readiness, faithfully serving Him, and proclaiming the gospel until He comes again to reign forever as King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16).nal state centered on the new earth in the new heavens. [Acts 1:11, Matthew 16:27, Revelation 20:11-15, Revelation 21:1-5]
Distinctives
Our What We Believe doctrine above represents the foundations of the Christian faith. The distinctives within Valley Bible Church may distinguish us from other churches who would affirm our belief statements above. These distinctives shape the way that Valley Bible Church is led and the direction the church is headed. The body should expect that the distinctives will be maintained in all ministry environments at VBC and upheld by the elders, deacons, pastors, staff, and ministry leaders.
THE CHRISTIAN LIFE: We believe all Christians should live for Christ and not for themselves (Galatians 2:20). Each one is gifted to serve the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:4-7). By obedience to the Word of God and daily yielding to the Holy Spirit, every believer will mature and be conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 12:1-2). Spiritual growth primarily happens in the context of community (the church) through discipleship, prayer, study and fellowship (Hebrews 10:24-25).
THE CHURCH: We believe that the church is the body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the head (Ephesians 1:22-23, Colossians 1:17-18). The church family consists of disciples who have trusted by faith in the finished work of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-13). Each member of the church family has been uniquely granted gifts by the Holy Spirit to be exercised for the benefit of one another and to the glory of God (Romans 12:4-6). The purpose of the church is to make God known to a lost world, to preserve and teach the true gospel message of Jesus Christ, to build up and encourage one another, and to glorify God by embracing and showcasing His love in our lives (1 Timothy 3:15, Ephesians 4:15-16, Matthew 28:18-20).
WATER BAPTISM: We believe that baptism is the public proclamation of a believer showing their faith in the crucified, buried, and risen Savior, and the union with Him in death to sin and resurrection to a new life in Christ (Acts 2:37-38, Acts 8:36-39, Romans 6:1-11). Water baptism is an external act of obedience reflecting our internal obedience to Christ (Matthew 28:19-20). It also serves as a reminder of the unity and fellowship we share in Christ (Ephesians 4:4-6).
COMMUNION: We believe the purpose of communion, the Lord’s Supper, is for believers in Christ to remember the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross establishing the new covenant with God (Matthew 26:26-29, Luke 22:14-20). By doing this we proclaim the Lord’s death until He returns. We believe that the elements in communion represent the body and blood of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:23-28).
MARRIAGE: We believe God created humanity as male and female, and that He designed people for a monogamous, sacred covenant between one man and one woman each having unique roles within the marriage covenant (Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 5:22-27).
ELDERS: The pattern throughout the New Testament is that each local body of believers is shepherded by a plurality of God-ordained men who meet the qualifications found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9. The primary responsibility of an elder is to serve as a shepherd/overseer of the church (Acts 20:28) involving a number of specific duties. As spiritual overseers of the flock, elders care for the church and act as shepherds (1 Peter. 5:1-3), setting an example for all (1 Timothy 4:11-12).
Elders fulfill their role by:
Providing spiritual care and guidance for the church family.
Protecting the integrity of the gospel and ensuring sound doctrine (Titus 1:9; 2:1).
Identifying and equipping future leaders (1 Timothy 4:14).
Teaching and encouraging believers in their faith (1 Timothy 3:2; 5:1).
Working together to establish and uphold church policies (Acts 15:22).
Through their leadership, elders seek to shepherd the church with humility, wisdom, and a deep commitment to God’s Word, helping the body of Christ grow in faith and unity.
MEN AND WOMEN IN THE CHURCH: We believe that all humans are created in God’s image; that God created two distinct and complementary sexes, male and female; that men and women are absolutely equal in essence, value, and dignity. We believe that all Christians, both men and women, are to participate in the ministry of the church, but the Bible reserves the role of elder/pastor specifically for qualified men.
